Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is abnormally excessive sweating that's not necessarily related to heat or exercise. The people it affects can sweat so much that it soaks through their clothes or drips off their hands. Besides disrupting normal daily activities, this type of heavy sweating can cause social anxiety and embarrassment.

Hyperhidrosis of the armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis) is a common site to be affected. It can have a major impact on people’s lives and sufferers are constantly aware of trying to hide embarrassing wetness or sweat stains on clothes, and this can interfere with work or social activities.

What is the treatment for Hyperhidrosis?

There is no known cure for hyperhidrosis, but it is possible to manage the symptoms of the condition. For example, wearing loose-fitting white or black coloured clothes can minimise signs of sweating, socks can help to absorb moisture and wearing leather shoes rather than enclosed boots or sports shoes can help too. In addition, avoiding drinking alcohol or eating spicy food can help to minimise your symptoms.

If your hyperhidrosis is affecting your confidence, it is possible for it to be treated. We use one of the most effective and proven treatments for hyperhidrosis which is small injections of Botox ® into the underarms. In small doses the Botox ® blocks the nerves that supply the eccrine glands, preventing them from producing sweat. This procedure is considered very safe and only takes around 30-40 minutes but will last anywhere between 4 to 12 months.
